Good Morning 4th & 5th Graders,

Let’s get started with Master Key for the first 10 minutes.

We will then be getting back into Sketch Up. I would like you to continue to work on a public building in the style of architect Santiago Calatrava. Make sure to use symmetry, repetition, arcs and geometric shapes, like the triangle, in your structure.

When finished you’ll be working in Google Sketch Up for the remainder of your time. If you are still working on the video tutorials, please continue. Otherwise, I would like you to create a public building, – airport, train station, museum, etc. that is inspired by the what you saw yesterday in Santiago Calatrava’s work. You can refer to his website as much as you like. Have fun.

What is architecture? How does it effect us? Why are some buildings more interesting to look at than others? What does an architect do? Do they only design houses? Museums? Skyscrapers?

Starting today we’ll look at the work of some important contemporary architects. Hopefully, what you see will inspire you when your designing your own structures in Sketch Up.

Today we’ll start class by watching a short film on the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. While your watching the film think about what was the inspiration for his Satolas. What inspires you? What would it look like?

To get some general background on Santiago Calatrava and see more pictures of his work, you can visit the links above and his site on Wikipedia.
