New Stage Lights at Lewis

Last week we had new stage lights installed in our school auditorium. The funds for the purchase of the lights came from our PTA. On Monday Tori Padellford along with her husband Robert, who works for Portland Center Stage, came in and adjusted and focused the lights. We look forward to having them for our drama productions, assemblies, and talent show. We thank our PTA for their continued support.

Lewis Elementary School Summer Hours

The school office will close for the year on June 25th. The office will reopen on August 19. Summer office hours are 8:30 - 4:00 pm. Be sure to check the school web site over the summer for updates and new information...

End of School Year...

photo.jpgOn Tuesday we celebrated the school year with an all school assembly where we reviewed the year with a slide show and a video tribute to our 5th grade students who are leaving us this year. With a mixture of laughs and a few tears we said goodbye to our 5th grade students and wished them well as they move on to middle school.

We also gathered to say goodbye to our school secretary, Kathy Grahn. Kathy will be retiring at the end of this month. The students shared with her a video that Mr. Jamesbarry created which expressed our appreciation and admiration for her many years of service to the Lewis community. We will miss her warm and caring work.

This week teachers will be working to finish up report cards and working to prepare their classrooms for the summer break. We will also be interviewing applicants for our school secretary position. In addition we plan to interview for our vacant kindergarten teaching position that opened up with Mrs. Parks leaving us for a position in St. Helens. When we fill these positions I will share that information here and also through our Google Group.

June 4, 2008 Newsletter

June4-08The June 4, 2008 edition of the Lewis Elementary School Newsletter is available for download. Highlights are listed below.

Kathy Grahn Retirement
As we noted earlier this spring, our school secretary, Kathy Grahn, will be retiring after 21 years of service to the Lewis community. Kathy has posted a goodbye note in our Classroom Notes today. We wish her well, but know she will be always be a part of our community.

Mrs. Parks Leaving Lewis
After serving the Lewis community for ten years, Mrs. Linda Parks has accepted a teaching position with the St. Helens School District and will not be returning to Lewis next school year. This is a tremendous opportunity for Mrs. Parks to teach in a school much closer to her home and family. We wish her well in her new position and will miss the kind and caring manner with which she worked with her students.

5th Grade Promotion
We will be honoring our 5th graders at our end of year assembly on Tuesday, June 10 at 1:45 pm.

Congratulations to all the participating students and staff - as of last Friday we already reached our goal of 2000 total participants for the month and could pass 2500 by the end of the challenge. Word has it that the level at which Lewis students and staff have embraced the challenge has gotten the attention of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and other schools.

An end-of-challenge celebration will be held on Sunday, June 8th from 10am-1pm in the South Park Blocks downtown. The winning school will be announced, along with entertainment, a bike race, raffles/prizes, and more. All participants from Lewis should try to be there!
