Last Tuesday we went on our walking trip to the Woodstock Library. Our tour began with a review of what kinds of things are available to borrow from the library and what the rules are. Our tour guide also told a sort of scary witch story. Then we were shown the different sections, including music, videos, children’s books, and children’s computers. Students who applied for library cards got to check out books. On the way back from the library we had time to stop and get ice cream cones at the Surf Shack! Last week during centers time we reviewed how to use Raz-Kids, particularly how to take the quiz. I did a couple of tutorial sessions to show the step-by-step process of first clicking on the question sentence, then the words or pictures for each answer choice BEFORE selecting answer A or B. This week we will find out how to use the voice-recording function of the Raz-Kids program. One of our Art activities last week was “Marble Painting”– we put a marble in black paint, rolled it around in a box on paper, then did the same with a marble dipped in orange paint. This week we will do more activities that reinforce understanding of the roles of community helpers, especially doctors, teachers, police officers, and firefighters. We expect to have a firefighter visit our classroom this week to go over fire safety in school and at home. Next week a police officer will come and talk about what he does to keep the community safe. We also plan to do some Harvest/Halloween activities, including more Letter of the Day videos, roasting pumpkin seeds, and Pin the Face on the Pumpkin.
