As we begin the second trimester of the year, the weather is chilly, and the days are short. Because repetition is so important for the students in room 5, we have lots of routines. So far, in the classroom notes, we have talked about our monthly themes. We also have daily and weekly routines. Our daily routines include the following:
After getting off the bus, the students are supported in putting away their lunch supplies, and their communication book. Students are also supported in taking off their jackets and coats and hanging them up. During this time we share current events, and listen to classical music. Then many of students go to general education for a while. The rest work on IEP goals.
After everyone is back in class, we have morning circle. Circle has many repetitive, activities which change every month. Between classroom activities, we listen to ‘transition music’ which is different for each day of the week.
From 12:20-12:50 3rd graders from Ms. Davis’s class come in and read stories to us. From 1-2:15 all students work on their IEP reading goals. We end the day with three group activities: a music group, a movement/body awareness group, and the reading of “Marvin K Mooney, will you please go now.” We always finish up by singing good-by to each student using the tune from the song B-I-N-G-O
