Welcome back! It sounds like you all had a very busy time away from school. On Monday during Morning Meeting we shared how we spend our Spring Break. Students had no problems coming up with an idea to write in their Weekend News Journals.
Our lessons this week during Writing Workshop are focused on learning why and how lead sentences are an important part of a good story. In addition, we will focus on four different types of story leads: description of character, description of setting, dialogue, and a hint of a problem. Through a variety of picture books the students will identify the types of leads and be able to justify why they fit into these categories. These lessons will enable and support the children as they revise their stories to include a strong beginning, middle and end.
In Mathematics the children are completing writing their Presents and Parcels Story Problems. We will type all of the story problems and post them on the bulletin board. Then the students will select problems to solve and record the strategies they used. During our class discussion, we will discuss and share ideas about ways that the students can communicate their thinking more effectively.
