Last week on Monday afternoon, we played Superflex Jeopardy with Ms. Davis. Students tested their knowledge of various Superflex characters, their traits, and strategies to defeat the Unthinkables. For Math, many of us worked on Touch Math skip counting by 2s, and 3s. The first graders began working on adding with Touch Math, and I’m impressed at how quickly they are catching on to it! On Friday we played “Capture the Coin”—students took turns picking a card with grid coordinates (like A,2), then taking that coin from the grid. The student with the highest total wins. This week we continue working on skip counting, now by 4’s and 5’s, and basic addition for the first graders. Number Corner activities include comparing fractions, telling time to nearest 5 minutes, and base-10 blocks for showing the date.
For Reading, students have been working on their Reading A-Z books and literacy activities. This week the books are about friends and feelings. Each reading group will read their book during a read aloud this week. We will also be doing DIBELS and DRA reading assessments this week and next. For Writing, students have finished their Ocean Creatures projects (finally), and are sharing them with the class. The Ocean Creatures books are on display in the hallway by our classroom. Students are writing journal entries using writing prompts about winter, friends, and feelings. Words of the Day this week feature compound words, including “anytime”, “lifeboat”, “grandson”, and “superhero”. Students will brainstorm lists of other compound words each day.
