Last week we finished our review of the long vowel sounds and are moving on to some common letter blends (ch, sh, th, st, etc.) Last Friday, in reading literacy centers, we had a spelling test on various long vowel sounds and the students did great. Our unit on the Body continued last week with a project where the students took a survey of three different classrooms and found out how many students have broken a bone. We created a bar graph to illustrate our data. Then the students got to fill out their own bar graphs by asking one another what kind of sports they liked.
This week we will be completing our Body unit as we build a digestive system and a circulatory system to our cut-out body of Tom. We will also be giving Tom a brain this week, and learning some facts about how and why we think. This week we are also gearing up for our big field trip on June 10th to the zoo, so we are beginning to make comparisons between the human body and animal bodies.
Next week will begin our new unit on Animals, which will compare and contrast mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. For the next couple weeks, many of our students will be focusing on their times tables. The kids are really excited about a new math computer game in our classroom called “Timez Attack”. The graphics are really fun and feel like a real adventure video game. The students are having a lot of fun and learning multiplication skills too! Today Mr. Lee visited our classroom and took three photos of different body parts of each student. We are going to compile them together and decorate and frame the pictures to make into great Father’s Day gifts.
