Notes from Mr. Post’s Classroom

Well it was an emotional week, but the students have been coping well with Adrien’s death. We have had conversations, we made cards to give to the Blajev family, and read stories including “Badger’s Parting Gifts” to help us all deal with our loss. Many staff and students attended Adrien’s service on Sunday, and it was good to see so much support for the family.

Last week for Writing, students each wrote two New Year’s resolutions, an academic one to work on at school, and a personal one to work on at home. Students will share their resolutions with the rest of the class during Share Time. Most students have finished writing the Ocean Creatures facts, and this week they are drawing the pictures to go in the booklets. For Math, we did some review and assessment of adding and subtracting using Touch Math. This week we are learning skip-counting by 2s and 3s, and the first graders are being introduced to Touch Math adding techniques. One thing we are focusing on in Number Corner is comparing fractions, particularly ones that are more or less than one half. For Reading, the groups are each reading and answering questions about stories of personal fiction. This will help prepare them for writing their own personal stories.
