We have finished our math unit on multiplication and division. We will be working on geometry in this next unit, but it is very important for students to continue to work on memorizing the multiplication facts. In class we are learning songs for each set, to the tunes of familiar folk tunes such as “Old Mac Donald”, “You are My Sunshine” and others. This will help them retain the facts and also access them, when they’re forgotten temporarily.
In writing we are working on our first five-paragraph piece, which is a personal narrative. We have done lots of lead-up activities and read children’s books that were personal narratives. We are using the four-square method to help students organize their thoughts before writing. Everyone is well on their way, and I am enjoying their personal stories very much. Most need to be reminded to include “delicious” details, so the reader can really “see” and “feel” what the writer is talking about. Ask your child what experience they are writing about in class.
