Our babies have arrived and we are very excited! After a week of anticipation while our aquarium was being prepared, Lindsey Arnold, the head of Reed College’s Outreach Science program, delivered about 100 salmon eggs to our classroom. We will be watching over them as they hatch and become fry that will be released into Johnson Creek. Our job is to daily record the water temperature, add ice to the water to keep it about 13 degrees Celsius, and remove any eggs that die and could contaminate the water. We are grateful for this collaboration with Reed, as the students get rich science experiences and weekly instruction from Reed students.
We have started the second unit of our new reading materials and the students are enjoying the stories, as well as benefiting from the targeted reading skills presented. It is a program with a great deal of depth, so there is a lot of learning for us teachers going on as well. This Friday there will be no school for children, and teachers will be attending workshops to become more familiar with the whole program, including a half day class on the technology component.
