So Miss M continues taking on more responsibilities in the classroom this week. She is sending a letter home to parents about some of the things we’ll be working on with the students. Feel free to contact Miss M through the school or you may email her at jrdaffron@gmail.com to find out more. Last week for Math, we finished working on word problems, and on this Monday, students made up their own word problems and had classmates solve them. Most students chose a topic of interest, like cars, shoes, or movies. This week we are working on measurement, and are doing some volume and length activities. On Friday we will use measuring spoons and cups to make something yummy to eat!
During Gardening with Julia, she talked about the “Lewis ducks”, who keep returning to Lewis school to lay eggs. The two ducks were nearby and we got to quietly walk up and watch them. We also observed our sugar snap peas, and they are even taller than last week and some of their tendrils are beginning to cling to the strings. We smelled and tasted leaves of mint and lemon balm. For Art this week, students are glazing the clay cutouts of the four stages of a butterfly’s life cycle. This week for Writing, we are beginning to write about story elements: the characters (who), the setting (where), the time period (when), the problem (what), and the solution (how). Students will take home leveled reading books and write about one of these elements each night for homework. We also had our first Words Their Way assessments, and students will continue doing daily word sorts.
