Last week we started our unit on Animals by describing the 5 basic classes of animals: Mammals, Birds, Fish, Reptiles, and Amphibians. Then we did activities to label pictures of different animal body parts, like horns, wings, scales, gills, antlers, claws, fur, and fins, and discussed their functions. Then we named animals that have each of those parts. Students followed Ed Emberly’s step-by-step method to draw animals including wolves, foxes, turtles, and racoons.
Last Friday and this Monday students chose which animal they will each report on before we see them at the Zoo this Thursday. Students will state the animal’s nickname, class, where it comes from, what it eats, how big it is, and how long that type of animal lives. On Monday, students finished their self-portrait series by doing a watercolor painting over their drawings. For Math, Reading, and Writing, we will continue doing mixed reviews and assessments for upcoming progress reports.
