We had a wonderful Art Night last week. Thanks to all the docents who did a fabulous job explaining our pieces. If you didn’t get a chance to come last Thursday, please walk in our halls this week as most of the art is still on display.
This week we are taking Round 2 of the math state OAKS test and also the science state OAKS test. We are studying Roman Numerals this week in math, reviewing fraction concepts, and starting a unit on the stock market. In science, we are finishing the vertebrate unit. Students will have a test on this unit on Friday. We are studying Early Colonies in Social Studies. The class is divided into three groups/colonies. Each group has a poster assignment that is due Friday. Please check my webpage for all these assignments. http:sylviajen.posterous.com. The students were given the criteria for the poster last week. They are reading the textbook and an ibook for information about this part of our U.S. history. We are starting novels this week that are historical fiction books on the Revolutionary War. Students will have assignments with their book. Please check if your child is behind in our last novel. The Pilgrim Stories assignments were due a week ago.
Our Reed College chemistry sessions ended last week. The session was about magnetism. The students have really enjoyed the chemistry lessons and are very appreciative of the work and effort that the Reedies spent every week in preparing these lessons for us.
Our Read-a-thon last Friday was very successful. Thank you to the families that supplied food. The students read (and ate) for almost 3 hours on Friday. Many students told me that they finished a book that day, and many students said that they read over 500 pages that day. Now is the time to collect the pledges and turn in the money. The due date for the Read-a-thon money is this Friday. Your child will be bringing home a note on the final amount due for OMSI camp this week. The final payment is due May 15th. Since camp is May 29 – June 1, we need to have all money collected next week!
