Here are some things you can do to help your child with Math from now through the winter break:
***1. Continue to watch for math homework. Some of the assignments will involve number games learned at school, which can be played over and over again. Please help your child find a safe place to store the materials and directions so the activities can be used repeatedly.
***2. Encourage your child to count quantities of objects by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s rather than 1 by 1.
***3. Allow your child to count the change in your pocket or purse. All second grade students need to learn to count mixed collections of coins up to $1.00. So if you have a spare few minutes, it would be a great idea to say to your child, “Show me 11 cents, 43 cents, 82 cents.” Every now and then, ask them to show you another way to make the same amount.
***4.If your child goes to the grocery store with you and you are using coupons point out how much each coupon is worth and, if possible, show your child that amount using coins. Eventually your child can be in charge of the coupons for your family!
***Thank you so much for all the time you spent at your child’s conference. It’s such an important time and I am grateful for your presence, input and attentiveness.
