Ms. Swan’s Second Grade

December 5, 2011

***We had an amazing trip to the Reed College Cooley Gallery. Educational Outreach Director Gregory MacNaughton did his usual magical job of drawing children into the art pieces with lively conversation and observations. Since he had prepared us so well with his earlier classroom visit and his talks about collections, it was a joy to see the exhibition. My deep gratitude goes out to our parent helpers, in alphabetical order: Dana (Simon), Marsha (Eamon), Mary Kay (Declan), Michelle (Haven), Rebecka (Lena) and Suzanne (Violette.)
***Our walking field trip to the Woodstock Library is THIS Friday. We are leaving right after recess, around 12:30. Please let me know by Thursday if you would like to join us for this trek.
***Speaking of field trips…thank you to everyone who has already turned in the permission slip for our upcoming outing to see the Magic School Bus play. As I mentioned, we need to turn the money in no later than December 13th in order to secure our reservation. It’s a bummer I know, but parents (and teachers) need to pay $9.00 as well for the trip. You can wait to pay me after seeing which names are drawn if more than five parents sign up.
***Our interactive read aloud this week was Pearl and Wagner. Your child should be able to do a retell of the story for you. Our vocabulary words this week are: construct, sidekick, unique, contraption, foolproof, project, and daydream.
***The children have done a terrific job of helping “build” our addition and subtraction charts. We will be constantly using these charts to help develop our understanding of these operations.
***We sent off a check to Mercy Corps for $69.95. Hooray! We bought two acres of rice to plant and also raised an additional $12.00 to donate. The children were really excited to be able to help in such a grand way.
