Our full-time homework program started this week. I give homework Monday through Thursday, which is always due the next day. Portland Public School policy is that we give some homework that reinforces out classroom work. This doesn’t mean “busy work.” It’s actual practice to help the students master his/her spelling words, learn a Math concept, do an observation for an upcoming lesson, etc.. Also, we at Lewis School have an expectation of an additional 15 minutes (at the second grade level) of reading practice nightly.Thank you to all the parents for helping to build the doing and returning of homework into the daily schedule. As if you didn’t have enough to do already, right? I keep careful track of who is completing the homework and it is also a grade on the report card. These are good habits to be building now.
Lynne Leake (the other second grade teacher) and I have been working diligently on planning a number of special field trips for the year. We will be sending you home a list of them shortly. For now, our first one to look forward to is a walking field trip to the Reed College Cooley Gallery on Thursday, October 2nd. Details to follow. Parent helpers are welcome to join us.
Today (Monday as I write this) we were gifted with some new classroom books from the Lewis Book Fair. Huge “thank you’s” go to the families of Della, Josh, Kellsy and Mary Jo for the gift of exciting new books. We are all thrilled and so grateful for your kindness and generosity!
