After studying mapping, the earth and continents, our trip to the Oregon Zoo was a huge success! Each child carried their own map and recording journal, which they used to find their way. Discovering and reading maps throughout the zoo was exciting. While eating snack, Sam realized he was standing on a large tile map of Africa and he and his friends were pleased to identify the animals of that continent. Brandon found the equator on the penguin map. Using our observation skills to record was an important part of our day. Joey watched a bird in the African aviary work on a nest piece by piece. Payton had so much information to record she filled the front and back of her pages. Audrey recorded the tigers are good at hiding. Angela drew a detailed picture of the male lion and noted his large claws, while Anastasia wondered why the lions like to sit on rocks. Next we will share what we observed and learned to create two art projects. Stories from around the world will be read, and reading about the children’s lives will give us a new look at the continents.
