Mrs. Parks Class — 1/24/07

I hope your family was safe and happy during the snow.  I know spirits were high at our house….especially when we knew the night before that school was late or canceled.  My oldest son, however, got a taste of the “real world” as he had to get up and go to work even though his brothers and sisters were not going to school.
This week we are beginning an exploration of pebbles, sand and soil.  Students may bring a rock to school to share with the class.  Please do not send anything that is valuable (monetarily or sentimentally).
Our focus in Second Steps (Health) is calming down before deciding how to handle any situation.  Students are practicing four methods of calming down: Taking deep breaths or “belly breathing”, Counting backward slowly, thinking calm thoughts, and talking to themselves.  Once calm, students are learning to think of several possible actions and pick the best one.
Yesterday, your son or daughter brought home a bag to put a treasure in.  We will be writing about these on Thursday and Friday.  Each child will get to share his or her item with the class.
