Thanks once again to our fantastic chaperones for keeping an eagle eye on our energetic fourth graders during our trip to Bonneville on Thursday. Jim, Todd, Collin, Julie, Tim, and Greg were champs when it came to making sure everybody stayed safe and attentive while we were guided through the powerhouse and the visitor center. Be sure to read what the students had to say on the class blog. Although unintended, one of the lasting memories of this trip may well be the Winterhawks coach bus we went on! Hopefully, they’ll remember about hydropower, turbines, magnets, coils, and salmon, too. This was our last bus field trip of the year. We have at least one walking field trip planned and that is when we will do our Pioneer Walk down to Johnson Creek in June. Start looking for pioneer clothes like bonnets, long dresses, and shawls for the girls and jeans, flannel shirts, and cowboy hats for the boys.
We welcome student teacher Erin Altz (Miss Altz to the kids) starting on Monday. Miss Altz is a graduate student at Concordia University going for her Masters in Education. She will end the year with our class, then start up again with my new group of fourth graders in September. Miss Altz will be observing a lot, planning and teaching a few lessons, and she will be helping out with individual students between now and the rapidly-approaching end of the school year. She will be sending more information about herself later on in the week, but I wanted to add that she was born and raised in Hawaii and is dedicated to the teaching of garden-based education. She also has a link to Lewis: six years ago she helped design and install the ecoroof in the Lewis Outdoor Education area! Miss Altz visited the class on Wednesday and made some new friends. Some students even made a daisy chain necklace (like a Hawaiian lei, but without the tropical flowers) for her at noon recess. I am thrilled to have her onboard for the remainder of the year and into next year.
Please help your child find a good book or two to read at school during quiet reading times. We had our last Library session of the year last week and the students need solid reading material for those times. I am asking that the kids leave dessert books at home and stick with main course books here at school.
Don’t forget the Lewis Concert this Thursday, May 24. Several of our students are involved in Strings and Boomin’ Beats. I wouldn’t miss it for anything!
We are working on a math work sample as well as a writing piece that will be used as a work sample. These are required and will need to be done as neatly and accurately as possible. Probability and data are our main focus in math after we finish work samples. Homework this week is the math and spelling packets and the reading log.
