I want to give a big thank you to the parents who accompanied us on our trip to see “The Storm in the Barn” last week. The play was very well done and the students enjoyed getting to see live theater.  Also, thanks to everybody who came to view the art, listen to Mr. Jamesbarry’s music groups, and eat the great desserts in the Paintbrush Cafe last Thursday at Art Night. I am totally amazed at the Lewis community’s involvement in events such as these. I am hoping we get a similar response for the Family Dance and Singalong this Friday, May 11. See the post on our class blog http://mrcolvin.wordpress.com for more information on how you can help with this fundraising dance.
The big event this week is our trip up to Lelooska Village in Ariel, Washington on Thursday, May 10. We get a chance to see and hear master storytellers at their best. The masks that Chief Lelooska and his family members have made are impressive works of art in their own right, but throw in the authentic stories of Raven, Wolf, and Eagle and you have an experience that will stay with you for a long time. In terms of logistics for the trip, please make sure your child brings a lunch if he or she usually does and dress warmly. Even though the forecast is for pleasant temperatures, Ariel is at a higher elevation and is largely in the shade. The longhouse where the stories take place is cold, even on warm Spring days. I recommend long pants, closed toe shoes (no flip flops or sandals!), and a coat. I will contact chaperones separately, but I can say now that some parents will need to carpool because of lack of space on the bus. The following Thursday, May 17, we go to Bonneville Dam and Fish Hatchery to see firsthand how electric power is generated and to explore the salmon cycle that we studied at the beginning of the year when we had our salmon tank in the room.
Yes, we are still doing our regular academic activities on top of everything else that comes our way in the busy, busy month of May. In Math we are focusing on Probability and Data, for Writing we are going to work on a persuasive piece. In reading and social studies we are continuing our focus on the Oregon Trail with our Journey West book.
