This is a short, but full week. Fifth grade parents have the opportunity every Thursday to deposit money in a school account to build up a savings for the fifth grade OMSI Camp. Mrs. Raleigh, Jame’s mother, will collect the money outside of Ms. Jen’s room. Don’t forget that I need a fifth grade volunteer each week to work in the Student fundraising store.
In science both grades are studying the circuits and pathways of electricity. In the arts our students are starting the Taiko Artists in Residency on Thursday, which includes not only learning percussion on traditional Japanese drums, but also learning about the Japanese culture. Finally, both the fourth and fifth graders are learning new social studies units. The fourth graders are starting a homework packet that requires them to interview family or known adult acquaintances to personalize the concept of history. In class they are doing research on laptops and in textbooks. They then will use this knowledge to create an attractive brochure to persuade people to visit, stay, or invest in Oregon. At the same time the fifth graders are discovering what it was like for the Pilgrims to travel on the Mayflower. They are learning what life was like for these immigranst to the New World by taking on the role of one of the actual Pilgrims.
