In Reading Workshop the children are learning to classify books by Genre. This week we are learning about Traditional stories that are passed down from one group to another in history. These stories are classified as tall tales, folktales, fables, fairy tales, and legends.
I am reading the following to the children:
Tall Tales-Pecos Bill and Paul Bunyan
Fairy Tales- Jack and The Beanstalk
Legend-The Legend of the Bluebonnet
Fables-Aesop
Folktale-Strega Nona
After each reading we will discuss the story, list the characteristics, and record our findings in the Genre Folder.
This week The Reading Log will become part of the Homework. During Reading Workshop I have modeled how to record the information about books read. Your child will need to use the Log to keep track of their reading. Your child will need to record the books read and then write their thoughts about the book. In addition, they need to record the number of minutes read on the October Calendar. Recording the genres in the Reading Log isn’t required at this time.
The National Geographic Magazine will become an integral part of our Reading Program. It’s an excellent resource to introduce the children to Informational Text. We will read for Understanding, Vocabulary Acquisition, and Current Events. That’s the reason for ordering the magazine for our students. Please send the $5 for the cost of it if you haven’t already.
The Volunteer Calendar will be posted on Thursday, October 13th.
