The children are completing their Desert dioramas that depict animals and plants that live in the arid Sonoran Desert. The dioramas will be on display during Conference Week.
Last week, the children had a fabulous learning experience performing scientific tests on the evidence that was found at the scene of the crime. After careful analysis of the results the children discovered that Jan had planted the evidence that made Bill appear to be the one who borrowed Mr. Bear.
Officer Hays was our special guest on Friday. He gave the children an overview of what “a real detective” does when solving a crime. The children were curious about his job and asked a lot of questions during his presentation. This week they are writing thank you letters to him.
This week we will continue the study of the Mystery Genre in which students will become Reading Detectives! They will learn the elements of a Mystery, which include characters (suspect, witness, and detective), plot structure and the vocabulary that they likely will encounter in a Mystery. After the Thanksgiving Holiday the children will be in Detective Clubs reading and solving the mystery they are assigned to. I will provide more details about this Reading Unit in my next Class News entry.
Looking forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress in Second Grade.
