Last week we started our World Cultures unit in Italy. We did virtual tours of Italy on Google maps, and colored maps to learn about the locations of major cities, including Rome, Venice, and Palermo. Mr. Lee showed us how to cook “pizzelle”, which are crispy waffle-cookies. We made Italian flags and learned the meaning of each color: Green= Hope; White= Faith; Red= Charity. On Wednesday afternoon we set up an Italian “ristorante”, and students used menus and ordered either a pizza slice or spaghetti, or the combo, then “paid” for their meals and beverages at the class cash register.
This week we are studying Brazil, and we will make Carnivale masks. We are also learning map-reading skills, including the history of maps, the four basic directions, and typical features found on maps and globes. For the letter of the week, we are back to “A”, and this time learning different words that have the long-A sound, such as “day”, “play”, “wait”, and “tail”. For math, we are learning to add larger numbers. For art, we are continuing to work on clay pots.
