Last week we started our unit on Animals by describing the 5 basic classes of animals: Mammals, Birds, Fish, Reptiles, and Amphibians. Then we did activities to label pictures of different animal body parts, like horns, wings, scales, gills, antlers, claws, fur, and fins, and discussed their functions. Then we named animals that have each of those parts. Students followed Ed Emberly’s step-by-step method to draw animals including wolves, foxes, turtles, and racoons.
Last Friday and this Monday students chose which animal they will each report on before we see them at the Zoo this Thursday. Students will state the animal’s nickname, class, where it comes from, what it eats, how big it is, and how long that type of animal lives. On Monday, students finished their self-portrait series by doing a watercolor painting over their drawings. For Math, Reading, and Writing, we will continue doing mixed reviews and assessments for upcoming progress reports.

We put the rest of Tom’s “insides” together, including bubble wrap for lungs, an apple for a heart, a cauliflower brain, and yarn for intestines. On Friday we played Buzzword to review what students have learned about the body. Questions included “How many bones are in the body?”, “What do our lungs use when we breathe in?”, and “What does the stomach do to food?”. For Art, we have been taking pictures, making drawings, adding facts, and writing haikus to make a slideshow about the body.
We are continuing to learn words with letter blends, including “ch”, “sh”, “th”, “st”, “sp”, and “tr”.
Last week we finished our review of the long vowel sounds and are moving on to some common letter blends (ch, sh, th, st, etc.) Last Friday, in reading literacy centers, we had a spelling test on various long vowel sounds and the students did great. Our unit on the Body continued last week with a project where the students took a survey of three different classrooms and found out how many students have broken a bone. We created a bar graph to illustrate our data. Then the students got to fill out their own bar graphs by asking one another what kind of sports they liked.
This week we will be completing our Body unit as we build a digestive system and a circulatory system to our cut-out body of Tom. We will also be giving Tom a brain this week, and learning some facts about how and why we think. This week we are also gearing up for our big field trip on June 10th to the zoo, so we are beginning to make comparisons between the human body and animal bodies.

Next week will begin our new unit on Animals, which will compare and contrast mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. For the next couple weeks, many of our students will be focusing on their times tables. The kids are really excited about a new math computer game in our classroom called “Timez Attack”. The graphics are really fun and feel like a real adventure video game. The students are having a lot of fun and learning multiplication skills too! Today Mr. Lee visited our classroom and took three photos of different body parts of each student. We are going to compile them together and decorate and frame the pictures to make into great Father’s Day gifts.

Last week we began our unit on The Body. We started off the week discussing what we want to learn about the body. We focused most of the lessons on our skeleton and the different parts of our body that our bones protect. The students learned that there are 206 bones in the human body and cut out and labeled their own mini skeletons. We finished up with the letter “u”, learning about both the short “u” sound as in “cut” and the long u sound in “cute”. In math we worked on time and money as well as adding in a few measurement lessons that went along with measuring the length of their hands and their height. At the end of the week we spent most of our art time on beautiful mother’s day cards. The students got to sign the cards with their own hand prints and then we measured the length of their hands in inches and in centemeters. On Friday, the students got to take home their cards as well as their amazing pinch pots they made from clay and fired in a kiln.

On Friday, the students got to take home their cards as well as their amazing pinch pots they made from clay and fired in a kiln.

This week we are getting further in depth with the body. Each day this week will focus on one of our senses. Today we learned about the sense of touch. In the morning we made a list of the things you can do with your hands and the things you can do without your hands. Then at art we taped our thumbs to our fingers and painted eggs. The lesson was to teach students the importance of their thumbs when touching and working with their hands. It was a lot of fun and very messy! In the afternoon we learned about using descripitve words with the sense of touch as each student got the opportunity to reach in a secret bag and describe what they felt inside. On Wednesday we are going to spend the day on the sense of hearing. This will include a lesson where we blindfold the students and make sounds such as ringing a bell or ripping paper and the students must identify the sounds without using their eyes. This week the letter of the week is “y”. Each day we will focus on a different sound the “y” can make depending on what vowel it is paired with. Today we worked on the long a sound with the letter why in words like: play, day, stay, and away. Tomorrow we will be working on the oy sound as in toy, boy, and joy.

Students each reviewed a map of the classroom and pointed out the color-coded features on the key. Then they followed the four basic directions as shown on the maps and there were also signs hanging on the walls of the classroom to indicate North, South, East, and West. An “X” marked the spot for each student’s treasure. Last Wednesday we took a walking trip to Safeway to deliver the invitations to Art Night, and to buy ingredients to make sandwiches. Three teams made shopping lists, bought ingredients for one kind of sandwich and a side. Students helped make the sandwiches and microwaveable Mac’n'Cheese.
This week we begin a unit about The Body, and have begun by measuring how tall each student is, and comparing the heights of the tallest and shortest adults in the world. We have pushed our big treasure hunt from last week to later on this week and the students are excited to read their own “treasure maps” and use the key to find their treasure. This week in art the students have painted their clay pots and they are ready to be fired up. We used our homemade playdough from last week to make maps of the United States for a more tactile experience in understanding maps. The letter of the week is “O.” We will be focusing on the long “o” sounds that come from both oa words such as “goat and boat” as well as from a silent e such as “bone” and “cone.” This week we will be finishing up our month long unit on different cultures. Next week we are going to start a new unit on the body.

Last week our classroom explored the country of Brazil. We learned many facts about the Amazon Rain Forest and some amazing creatures that live there. The students continued to explore using maps and practicing with the directions of north, south, east and west. We created a giant classroom map of Brazil and filled the country’s borders with things we learned about Brazil. On Friday we had a a “carnival” party with Brazilian music. The students had a great time dancing in the carnival with masks they made in art.
Our unit on cultures continues this week as the students explore the country of India. Today we started an art project with elephant masks and the students learned about the exotic animals, and they also learned about the railway system of India. This week we are working on the letter “e” and the long e sound in words such as “sea” “tree” and “bean” In math we are adding, and some students are doing double digit numbers and working into regrouping towards the middle and end of the week.
Last week we started our World Cultures unit in Italy. We did virtual tours of Italy on Google maps, and colored maps to learn about the locations of major cities, including Rome, Venice, and Palermo. Mr. Lee showed us how to cook “pizzelle”, which are crispy waffle-cookies. We made Italian flags and learned the meaning of each color: Green= Hope; White= Faith; Red= Charity. On Wednesday afternoon we set up an Italian “ristorante”, and students used menus and ordered either a pizza slice or spaghetti, or the combo, then “paid” for their meals and beverages at the class cash register.
This week we are studying Brazil, and we will make Carnivale masks. We are also learning map-reading skills, including the history of maps, the four basic directions, and typical features found on maps and globes. For the letter of the week, we are back to “A”, and this time learning different words that have the long-A sound, such as “day”, “play”, “wait”, and “tail”. For math, we are learning to add larger numbers. For art, we are continuing to work on clay pots.

Last week we wrapped up our Folk and Fairy Tales unit with several stories about princesses including Princess and the Pea, and Princess and the Frog. We also read some silly, mixed up tales from “The Stinky Cheese Man”. The letter of the week was “X”, so we brainstormed words that begin with “ex-”, like extra, exciting, exercise, excellent, exit, and exterior. We continued doing subtraction strategies using our fingers for ten and under, and an abacus for numbers up to 20.
This week we are preparing for a walking trip to Safeway on Thursday. We are discussing and choosing snacks to buy, and making a shopping list. We are looking at a store directory to see which aisles different types of food are found. Students will each bring $2.00 to spend and will practice making purchases using the self-check out. We are reviewing coin values before going to the store. The letter of the week is “Y”, and words include “yes”, “year”, “you”, and “your”. I hope everyone has a great spring break!

Some students are using CoWriter to write parts of the story that will also be displayed with the prints. We read a few versions of Little Red Riding Hood, including one called “Little Red”, where the main character is a boy. Mr. Lee did an activity with the class in which students acted out The Three Pigs, The Three Bears, and The Three Billy Goats’ Gruff. In the garden, we helped Julia to replant some flower bulbs in better locations. Some of the students were fascinated with the worms they found in the dirt.

Students counted a dollar’s worth of coins. We used sidewalk chalk and marked how far students could walk in 100 steps. We also did a “Cold, Hard Cash Grab”, where each student had the chance to get up to 10 Shadow Bucks, for a grand total of nearly 100.
For our Folk and Fairy Tales unit, we read several versions of Jack and the Beanstalk, naming all of the characters, and comparing how each story was similar, and how they were different. We also discussed how magic is involved in a fairy tale, like Jack and the Beanstalk. This week we are reading different versions of Little Red Riding Hood and answering the 5 “W” questions.
Last week we read different versions of The Three Little Pigs and worked on sequencing– answering “What happened?” and in “What order?” Students drew pictures of the straw house, the stick house, and the brick house. This week we will do a printmaking project based on these three houses. On Monday, Lee worked with the students to do a reenactment of the Humpty Dumpty tragedy.
This week we are doing some activities related to the 100th day of school. We are practicing counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100. We checked how far we could walk in 100 steps. We flipped coins 100 times to see how many times they landed on heads or tails. We will also collect groups of 100 objects. We are also reading a few different versions of Jack and the Beanstalk this week and do more story comprehension activities.

We started our unit on Folk Tales and Fairy Tales last week by reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears. After each reading of the story, students helped answer the questions Who? Where? When? and What? To answer what happened in the story, we outlined eight main events. Students also participated in interactive versions of The Three Bears and Cinderella on BBC.com. On Friday we did many activities in honor of St. Valentine’s Day, including a card exchange, Hearts Bingo, Pin the Arrow on the Heart, and Musical Hearts. Students copied the phrases from heart candies, and “bought” candies by adding up the right amount of coins.
This week we will read several versions of The Three Little Pigs, and answer the questions Who? Where? When? and What? We will also compare how each story is similar and how each is different. Students will also do some story sequencing and draw scenes from the story. On Tuesday, we worked in the garden with Julia, helping to put more cedar chips on the pathways. We will also continue working with money and adding coins.

We also reviewed examples of things we can experience with each sense. We finished our Valentine mosaic project, and they look terrific. Last week we also played two matches of teachers vs. students hockey, which was a good workout for everyone.
This week we will begin a unit on Folk Tales and Fairy Tales, starting with Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will use these familiar stories to learn the basic elements of stories– the Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? We are continuing working on money skills, this week adding up the totals of mixed groups of coins. We are also working on writing names on Valentine cards to exchange this Friday.

Last week for our Five Senses unit, we focussed on sight and our eyes. We read books about the eyes, and looked through I Spy and optical illusion books. On Monday we went to the Cooley Gallery to see the Terry Winters exhibit. After looking at his prints and discussing them, Gregory led us in a printmaking activity of our own.
This week we will do some activities based on the sense of touch, including Brain Operation, the Mystery Box, and the sensory tub. Mr. Lee led an activity called See It, Feel It, Touch It, Taste It, sampling and guessing the names of ten kinds of breakfast cereal. The letter of the week is S, and words include see, saw, sat, soon, and sound. We are also continuing working with coin names and values.

Last week for our Five Senses unit we focussed on the sense of smell. Students brainstormed things they can smell including flowers, warm pie, pizza, cookies, smoke, garbage, wet paint, grass, coffee, the bathroom, and dogs. We played a game called Name That Smell, using items such as cinnamon, nutmeg, garlic, coffee, lime, orange, soy sauce, and rosemary. The letter of the week was “Q”, and words included quick, quack, quest, and queen. We also studied coin names and values.
This week we are doing activities related to the sense of sight. On Monday morning Gregory joined us from the Cooley Gallery to show us some samples of the art we will see there next week. He also showed us some optical illusions. Read alouds this week will include Theo LeSieg’s “The Eye Book” and some of Walter Wick’s “I Spy” books.
The letter of the week is “R” and words include ran, red, rug, row, and ring. We continue to study coin names and values, and learn how many cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters add up to one dollar.

Last week for our Five Senses unit, we focussed on the sense of taste. We read Yum! Mmmm! Que Rico! which describes many foods that originated in the Americas including blueberries, chiles, chocolate, vanilla, potatoes, and tomatoes. We did a juice tasting, using grape juice, with students trying to figure out how each sample was different (straight juice, watered down juice, and juice with a squeeze of lime). We tried foods that had each of the four basic types of tastes: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. This week we will be reading and doing activities related to the sense of smell, including a game called “Name That Smell!”
The letter of the week was “P”, and words of the day included “pop”, “pool”, “peel”, and “Post”. This week the letter is “Q”, and words will include “quick”, “quack”, and “queen”. We will be reviewing coin names, coin values, and how many of each type of coin adds up to a dollar. We have been doing tactile art activities, including working with Play Doh, and making paper mosaic hearts.

Last week for our unit on the Five Senses, students named the parts of the body for each sense: we smell with our noses; we see with our eyes; we taste with our tongues; we hear with our ears; we feel with our skin. We focussed on the sense of hearing, and students brainstormed things we can hear, including voices, music, buzzing, wind, knocking, and croaking. We held a “Hearing Bee”, with students listening to iMovie sound effects and guessing what each one was. We read “Horton Hears a Who” and other books with a hearing theme.
This week we will focus on the sense of taste, with activities to talk about various types of food, and to learn about the different types of taste: salty, sweet, sour, and bitter. We will read books about food and taste, including “Dinner at the Panda Palace”, “It’s a Spoon, Not a Shovel”, and “Yum! MmMm! Que Rico”, which is about foods from the Americas.

After sharing what we did for the break, it sounds like all the students and their families had a festive time. Just before the break we had a good week doing holiday activities. Students used Comic Life to make greeting cards. We used green and red paint to paint Christmas trees. On Friday we did a Holiday ABCs, naming holiday words for each letter of the alphabet. We read stories by a virtual fireplace (video projected on the whiteboard), and played Buzzword to test students’ story comprehension.
For January, our theme is the Five Senses. This week we are focussing on the sense of hearing, with listening activities, music, sound effects, and reading Horton Hears a Who. The letter of the week is O, and we will focus on the short, long, and double-o sounds in words. We are also spending some time this week to review the classroom rules and routines. On Monday Mr. Lee brought in a game called A to Z– students chose a topic such as “things made of metal”, then brainstormed words and pushed the letter that each word begins with.
