This week we continue to work in social studies on “traveling the Oregon Trail”. In reading, the two groups that I have are working on Reader’s Theater pioneer plays. The students will present these to the rest of the class. We are also working on our last science unit, which is “Circuits and Pathways”. Students are learning about electricity and how it travels. We have one last art activity as well, which is marbleizing paper, and is always a fun project. It’s hard to believe, and always a little sad too, that we are so near the end of the year. It has been a great school year!

The talent show was terrific! My husband and I really enjoyed it. A lot of wonderful work and effort, on the part of adults and all the students involved, really showed. Thanks for a great performance.
Our class has started a simulation of “The Oregon Trail”. Each class member has an 1850 name and identity, and we have divided the class into five wagon trains that are headed out West. We started, of course, at Independence, Missouri, by purchasing our wagon, carefully selecting and buying the supplies we hope will keep us alive for our many months on the trail, and packing them in as tightly as possible. We had a happy send-off, but it was very difficult leaving family members behind, along with many precious family heirlooms that we could not take on our wagons. The guides, who have been to Oregon before, say we have to think “Survival First!”

Most of the dams were great engineering feats; however, a few homes were devastated in the flood and torn off of their foundations! In spite of the “loss” it was a very enjoyable afternoon science activity!

This is the week of Art Night and my students are excited to be docents and to have the opportunity to share and talk about their artwork. Make sure to be here Thursday night between 6:30 and 8:00!
We are working on a new science unit called Land and Water. It is exciting, fun, and very messy! I’ve set up stream tables for small groups of students, and they are doing experiments with how water interacts with land. We’ve made a model of the water cycle in our tubs, and have been watching how erosion and deposition take place. We are using these setups for our state science samples, and are conducting experiments studying the relation between the velocity of water and the amount of erosion.
We are excited to be going to OMSI camp in just a few days. Please get camp money turned in right away, and ask Mrs. Keefer or myself if you have questions or concerns about camp. If your child is not going to camp, please let me know if they will be at school Mon-Wed.

Dear Parents,
For the students going to camp, I sent home a checklist of things they may need. Remember we have some extra things at school for kids to borrow, so ask before you worry about buying anything. For instance, we have some donated rain jackets from Columbia Sportswear. Camp time is coming soon, May 11-13. Tonight at 6:30 is our meeting for the fourth grade chaperones going with us. We are short on dads, so if you read this, and want to volunteer, please come to the meeting too. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendar for Art Night, coming up on May 7. Have a great week! Sincerely, Muriel Bennett

We had a terrific field trip last week as an introduction to our study of pioneers and the Oregon Trail. We visited the Philip Foster Farm, which is located near Carver, and is at the end of the Barlow trail. Sam Barlow and Philip Foster owned property there and they decided to build a trail from The Dalles around the south side of Mt. Hood and all the way to their property. This made it so pioneers traveling the Oregon Trail could avoid the only route to the Willamette Valley, which was floating down the treacherous Columbia River. It was a toll road and, of course, the first place these pioneers would end up was at the store and rest station at Philip Foster’s farm. On our visit we saw the old home with many artifacts in it, as well as built a log cabin with huge Lincoln Logs, loaded a wagon, washed clothes and put them through a wringer, used old-time tools, and chucked field corn and ground it up. Thank you very much to the adults who went with us on this fun day!

This week in math we are continuing our work on graphing. We will be learning about stem and leaf graphs, as well as line-plot graphs. In addition we will be looking at the statistics we’re gathering and studying the range, mean, mode, and median. We’ll be doing some fun activities to get our information for this.

Last week, before we finished our study of Northwest Coast Indians, we took a look at their beautiful, unique art. We learned about the strict structure of it, using ovoids and “u” shapes and their derivatives, and we looked at elaborate examples. Then each student created his or her own mask using only the oviid and “u” shapes. They turned out nicely, and are on the wall outside our classroom.
In science we are studying bones and skeletons. Pairs of students each have an owl pellet that they have pulled apart. This is always a high-interest fourth grade unit and the students have excitedly found many bones in their pellets. This week they are trying to hypothesize what creatures the bones have come from, and where the various bones would be found on those creatures. Several students have brought in bones that they’ve had at home, and that has added to the fun! Along with animal bones, we also are studying human bones.

Dear Parents, We have a second field trip this month. It is April 23, and we will be visiting the Philip Foster Farm, which is at the end of the Barlow Trail. (This was the overland passage that many pioneer families traveled on to arrive in Oregon City). It is a fun trip where the students get to experience pioneer tasks at different stations around this farm. I especially love the house, which is full of artifacts from those days and is very interesting to tour. Again the cost will be $10 for the tour and the bus. If you would like to chaperone, let us know on the permission slip. Thank you. Sincerely, Muriel Bennett

They may also bring a blanket to put across their laps if they want.	They will need a sack lunch. Do NOT be late. We leave at 9:00! We look forward to a great trip! Sincerely, Muriel Bennett

Yesterday we had a fabulous field trip to Ariel, WA to see the Lelooska Living Museum. Chief Tsungani, brother of the late Chief Lelooska, and his family shared with us Northwest Coast Native American songs, dances, and masks in their ceremonial home around the fire. It was a beautiful presentation! After the program we visited the museum next door, which has an immense collection of artifacts from Native American groups all over the U.S. Students saw the diversity in the the different regions and were excited to see unique items from the Native American group they have studied. Thank you very much to our chaperones Kathleen, Mo, Vickie, Candida, and Suzanne for going with us.

We are finishing up our unit on Native Americans this week, and taking our field trip to the Lelooska museum next Tuesday. Check with your child to make sure their permission slip is turned in. We still have availability for two or three more parents, if you are interested in chaperoning and are available. All our Native American reports are finished and turned in. The dioramas, which were due yesterday, are fabulous. The students put lots of work and creativity into them! Please stop by our end of the hall to see them on display. Speeches on each student’s Native American tribe will be finished up tomorrow and Friday.

Our Readathon continues this week, and ends Friday with our half-day reading celebration. Next week students need to collect pledges and bring the money back to school after spring break. OMSI camp is not that far away!
We completed our unit on fractions, which is always a very challenging one for fourth graders. We are now beginning decimals, and that should help extend the understanding of parts less than a whole. We will also be working with graphing all kinds of information and reading various graphs. Our social studies research is going well, and students are working to complete their reports on their Native American tribe. This week and next they should be creating a diorama at home which depicts the environment and the type of homes their tribes lived in. These should be brought to school on March 31.

The Lewis Auction was a wonderful event. Thank you so much to the many parents who worked so hard to make it a success. From my classroom I would like to thank Sharon Blajev, Jackie Dirks, Christy Perron, Chris Lowe, and Kathy Bartlett.
In art last week each student made a fun art project by selecting two calendar pictures that he/she liked and putting them together. Visit the upper grade hall to get a peek.
This week begins our 4th and 5th grade Readathon. Parents, relatives, and friends have pledged money for each page a student reads during in-class silent reading time for this week and next. The money will go toward the child’s OMSI camp expense. On Friday, March 20, all fourth and fifth grade students will read for the afternoon. They are excited not only to read, but they get to wear pajamas, be accompanied by a stuffed animal or two, and bring blankets or a sleeping bag to lie on. It should be very fun!
