3rd Grade News, Ms. Davis and Ms. Wieand

September 28, 2010

We had an exciting week last week! On Wednesday we had our first lesson with the Reed Biology Outreach program. The students learned how to use the scientific method to find out what was inside a set of mystery boxes. We also finished our first chapter book read aloud and enjoyed celebrating a great week by having choicetime together as a third grade on Friday.
This week in math we will continue working on place value and addition and subtraction strategies. In reading we have been learning about and practicing what good readers do. Students are working hard at finding just right books. You can help make sure your child is reading a just right book at home as well. Look for the green page in your child’s home folder titled Goldilocks Strategy to guide you. Students have also been practicing retelling what is happening in their books. In writing students are building a toolbox of things we should always do as writers, such as write complete sentences and include end punctuation. We expect writers to use these tools every time they write. We have also been gathering ideas for personal narratives.
Please make sure your child is reading and completing the reading log each night. Homework packets are due on Fridays, and there is a place for a parent signature each week. Thanks for all of your wonderful support at home!
