Music

July 1, 2008

Music education at Lewis provides a well-rounded, whole child approach for grades K-5. There are extended music opportunities beginning in 2nd grade with piano keyboarding and the use of midi keyboards. In 3rd grade students can join recorder club. 4th graders have the opportunity to join a string ensemble to learn violin in a group setting. 5th graders can join concert band and audition for the Orff performance band (Boomin’ Beats) that plays xylophones, metalaphones, and percussive instruments.

Music lessons for all grades incorporate both Orff and Kodaly methods of music instruction. The Orff method involves singing, clapping, dancing and instrumental work for children to create their own music. The Kodaly method uses voice as the primary instrument and draws from authentic folk music and composed works through sequenced instruction to develop children’s skills and capabilities.

CD Back Cover

This year our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students had the opportunity to work with musicians Kate Finn and Rick Weiss to each write, produce, and record a song. We have compiled all 7 songs onto a CD available for purchase. The cost is $5 and the funds raised will go to support arts and technology programs at Lewis.

Please consider purchasing one. The CD's are available in the school office and will also be sold at upcoming school events.
