I am happy to share with you that Mr. Paul Colvin has joined our staff to teach 4th grade. Mr. Colvin comes to Lewis from Woodmere Elementary School where he has taught 3rd grade, 4th grade, music and reading support. I am very pleased to welcome Mr. Colvin to Lewis and I look forward to him joining us for the coming school year.

Class placement letters will be mailed home on Monday, August 23, 2010. These letters will have student placement information, along with a welcome from your child’s new teacher, and information about the start of school. A reminder that school begins for our first – fifth grade students on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. The first day of Kindergarten will be Friday, September, 10, 2010.

What: Project Community Care Event
When: Saturday, August 28, 2010 – 9am-Noon
Where: At Lewis Elementary
Why: Help prepare your school’s grounds to welcome students back by participating in landscaping and grounds keeping events. Clearing debris around schools creates a safer, more enjoyable environment for students walking and rolling to school.

What: Community Appreciation BBQ (FREE)
When: Saturday, August 28, 2010 - 1-4pm
Where: Cesar Chavez K-8 (formerly: Clarendon-Portsmouth School) 5103 N Willis Blvd, 97203
Why: Join community members from across Portland at this free BBQ, including music, games, outdoor fun, and back to school resources.  Swing by the Safe Routes to School table to register your school for the October 6 International Walk + Bike to School Day and pick up a bag of prizes to encourage students at your school to walk + roll to school.

On Wednesday, July 28, 2010 students from the Lewis Elementary and Abernethy Elementary Garden Camps came to Lewis for a day of garden work and cooking. Under the direction of Genoa Executive Chef David Anderson and his brother, Ray Anderson, Sous Chef at Nuestra Cocina, students made pasta and created a wonderful lunch with items from the Lewis Elementary School garden. We thank both David and Raymond, and their respective establishments, for their time and work and for making this such a great event.

We could really use some help keeping up on the summer garden maintenance so, mark your calendars!

Saturday, August 28th 9am-12pm – Community Care Day – Clean-up front of school (entryway and parking lot areas)

If you are planning to attend one or both of the above events, please RSVP to lewislearninggardens@gmail.com so that we can get an idea of how many volunteers to expect.

If you are not available either of these days, but would like to volunteer an hour or two of your time to weed and tend to the vegetable beds at the school, please let me know. I will be at the school from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm everyday this week for Camp Invention (July 19-23rd) and I could take a few moments to show you an area to focus on and give you some tools to use.
