Snowmen

Students in Ms. Swan’s classroom and Ms. Kennedy’s classroom met together on Wednesday as Buddy Classrooms and shared the book The Snowman and then worked together to create ceramic snowmen. The snowmen are now on display in the glass case in the north hallway.

Shepherd’s Door Holiday Drive

Portland Rescue Mission’s “Shepherd’s Door” women and children’s facility needs your help.
When children come with their mothers to Shepherd’s Door they are going through a recovery of their own and need special care. By bringing them healing, they help moms break the generational cycle of homelessness.

We are doing a needs based drive rather than a toy drive, however, a toy or even a financial gift is perfectly acceptable and appreciated. New and CLEAN, GENTLY used items are great. A box is outside the office door for donations. Please leave your donations by Friday, 12/16. If you miss the deadline, please contact Emily Vierck before 12/22 to arrange a pick-up – 503.891.6443.

For Infants: Blankets, spoons & bowls, teething rings, mobiles w/ lights or music.
For Toddlers: Legos, blocks, connecting rings.
Outdoor Toys: push cars that kids can ride in, bikes, scooters, helmets, sandbox toys, sturdy play balls, sidewalk chalk, sprinklers, water balloons, Slip n’ Slide, kiddie pools.
Musical Instruments: Tambourines, shakers/maracas, bells, child guitars, child pianos.
Art Supplies: Washable paint, watercolors, crayons, markers, stamps & ink, construction paper, rolls of white drawing paper, stickers.

Staff Changes…

I have some news to share with you regarding our 3rd grade team. Below is the text of a letter that was mailed over the break to families of students in Rooms 22 and 16. It outlines the changes that will take effect in January…

November 22, 2011

Dear 3rd Grade Families,

I am writing to share with you some staff changes that will be effective when we return to school in January.

After serving the students and families of Lewis Elementary School for over 11 year, Mrs. Aleta Ross has decided to retire and she will be starting her retirement in January. She believes that now is the best time for her to make this decision and we support her, and thank her for her years of service to our school and community. We congratulate her on this career milestone and wish her and her family the best as she leaves us.

Mrs. Ross’ retirement creates a vacancy that will be filled by Mrs. Patty Zimmerman. Mrs. Zimmerman is a veteran teacher who has worked at Lewis for the past four years. Before that she taught for many years at Duniway Elementary. This year Mrs. Zimmerman has been team teaching 3rd grade with Ms. Davis, teaching the afternoon section. She has been filling in for Stephanie Wieand, who has been on family leave.

Ms. Wieand was scheduled to return to school in January, but after careful consideration she has decided to extend her leave through the end of the academic year. I am happy to share with you that our literacy support teacher, Elissa Dingus will be moving from half time to full time, and will be filling in for Ms. Wieand for the remainder of the school year. She will be team teaching with Ms. Davis.

When students return to school on Monday, we plan to share this information with them. In the coming weeks both Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Zimmerman will be working to create a smooth transition for the students in Room 22, and Mrs. Zimmerman, Ms. Davis and Ms. Dingus will be working to do the same for the students in Room 16.

Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Ross on her retirement, and please welcome Mrs. Zimmerman and Ms. Dingus as they move into their new roles.

Lewis Dines Out at Burgerville – November 9

Lewis Dines Out: Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Burgerville on SE 26th and Powell.
Lewis partners with local restaurants to offer Lewis Dines Out nights, which means the restaurant will give a percentage of sales on a selected night to Lewis Elementary School. Join us for the first Lewis Dines Out of the school year at Burgerville on SE 26th and Powell on Wednesday, November 9th from 5-8 pm. Burgerville will donate 10% of sales to Lewis on this night. In a hurry? Get your meal to go instead, because it all goes toward Lewis. Tell your friends and family!
