3rd Grad Recorder Club
4th Grade String Ensemble
5th Grade Band
Hello Lewis Community,
With the coming of October we are just getting ready to start up our Musical Performing Groups. These groups are open to students from 3rd to 5th grade. Below you’ll find a description of each group and when they start. I’ll be talking to each class about these groups during our regular music times. Along with this general information sheet I have sign up sheets in the music room and on my website @ lewiselementary.org/music. Please feel free to talk with me about any of the groups. I hope you find something you like!
Lewis Concert Band: Are you in the 5th grade at Lewis? Would you like to learn how to play an instrument and be a part of a musical group? Come join the Lewis Concert Band. Please fill out a permission form and come to our first Band Meeting on Tuesday October 9th at 3:05 PM in the music room. All who are interested, whether new or returning, should come to this meeting. We will have rehearsals every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:05 - 3:45 PM. There is no audition or previous experience necessary to join. We will find instruments for all who want to play. There is a fee to rent a district instrument.
4th Grade String Ensemble: New this year is the 4th Grade String Ensemble. This group is open to all 4th graders. Students will learn to play the violin in a group setting. No violin experience is required. Come to our first meeting on Monday October 8th at 3:05 PM. This group will meet twice a week on Monday and Wednesday from 3:05 - 3:35 PM. There is a fee to rent a district instrument.
Boomin' Beats:
4th and 5th graders the Boomin Beats are starting soon. What are the Boomin’ Beats you ask? The Beats are a small group of Lewis students who love to play, sing and dance. Students play Orff xylophones, metalaphones, and percussive instruments. We sing and play recorders and develop creative movements to accompany our songs. I will post a signup sheet in the music room. This year the Boomin’ Beats will meet on Thursdays from 12:35 – 1:15. There is a limited number of spots, so there is an audition. The audition process takes several weeks and will involve playing, singing, and moving. I’ll explain more at our first meeting on Thursday October 11th at 12:35 in the music room.
3rd Grade Recorder Club: Third graders are you wishing there was more music in your day? Do you want to learn an instrument, sing songs, and play musical games? If this sounds fun to you, come join the Lewis 3rd Grade Recorder Club. We meet once a week before school every Friday. Our first meeting will be before school Wednesday October 10th at 8:10 AM in the music room. Grab a sign up sheet today. All 3rd graders can join.

Main Web Resources
Here are my main web resources for both teachers and children. I’m sure there are many more, but these are the main ones I’ve used both in the classroom and to help prepare for lessons.
This first set of links are related to the 5 or so items I suggested during our time that I use almost daily.
MicroTrack Digital Recorder - Portable digital recorder. (Check Mike Klinger’s site for better price.)
iTalk - mic adapter for iPods.
Digital LCD/DLP Projectors - To project computer screen. Your school should have some, but incase they don’t...
SmartBoard - Interactive whiteboard that allows you to interface with your computer.
To Boomin Beats and Family,
We’ve been invited to perform for the Island Creamery’s one year anniversary on Saturday April 14th. If you haven’t been to the Creamery, it’s located in the Safeway complex on Woodstock and is owned by one of our own Lewis family’s.
We’ve been asked to play from 12:00 to 12:45. You should arrive at the Creamery at 11:30. Please wear blue jeans and a white or blue short sleeve t-shirt.
I will need some parent/student volunteers to help move instruments from Lewis to the Island Creamery and back. If you can help out please contact or email me.
To prepare for this event, I will be calling a couple of extra practices. Below is a list of practice dates and times. If you can’t make a practice, please let me know.
This will be a great opportunity to play for our local community.

Extra Practices
Friday April 6th 3:00PM - 4:00 PM
Tuesday April 10th 8:00AM - 8:40AM
Thursday April 12th 8:00AM - 8:40AM
Starting the first week in April the schedule for all Band Level 1 groups will be changing. Instead of meeting once a week in four separate groups, Brass I, Percussion I, Clarinet I and Flute I will meet as a complete Level I Band. Our meeting times will be from 12:30 - 1:00 on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s.
That means, no more coming to school early for Percussion and Clarinet players. It also means that you’ll need to bring your instrument and music book twice a week.
You should drop off you instrument and music book in the music room in the morning before school starts. I will come collect you from the lunch room at 12:30.
This change to our schedule is necessary to prepare ourselves for our big performance on Art Night Thursday May 3rd.
Beginning Band will continue this schedule throughout the month of May. I’ll send more information about renting instruments over the summer later in the year.
If you have any questions call me at school or send me an email.
