About Our School

Oregon State Report Card Rating: Outstanding

Meriwether Lewis Elementary School has been welcoming children and their families for over 50 years. Located in the Woodstock neighborhood of Southeast Portland, Lewis sits on a parcel of land where once grew many gardens. The legacy of this is reflected in the Lewis Outdoor Education Center located on our campus. Lewis offers students an opportunity to excel in an environment that encourages creativity, responsibility and community.

Many families have chosen our school because of its moderate size, instrumental music program, visual arts focus, strong parent support and involvement, and the high quality education provided to our students by a highly qualified staff. Lewis is committed to a strong literacy and mathematics program. Specialized support in reading and math are provided in addition to regular classroom instruction. All students take part in weekly music classes provided by our music teacher. In addition opportunities exist for students to participate in Recorder Club, Level 1 & Level 2 band, and our Orff ensemble, Boomin Beats.

Mission Statement

Our goal at Lewis Elementary School is to provide a learning environment where students will meet and exceed academic standards, make thoughtful decisions, and solve problems. With these skills, students will gain knowledge, confidence, and self-discipline. Consistent high expectations for both the student?s academic effort and behavior, combined with strong parental support, will bring success.

"Before the movie, before the cartoon, was the book. The book and I are about the same age, having both arrived in the early 1950s. I was in fourth grade in Mrs. Stansell's class in Gold Beach, Oregon and she read several novels during the year, but the one that hooked me was Charlotte's Web. I have read it to every class I have ever taught since I started teaching. Plus I read it to my own two kids when they were around 9 or 10.

For many years we have attempted to explain our various PTA fund raising opportunities. Recently Lewis parent Jordan Benner created this great video that explains those PTA fund raising opportunities in a very understandable manner.
